Succession Planning Across All Levels
When you think of succession planning, what comes to mind? Do you imagine training high-potential employees to eventually become the CEO of your organization? This mindset is often the case for many organizations. What many key stakeholders within the hiring and succession planning process often forget is that succession planning across the entire organization is integral to success.
Building Your Multilevel Succession Roadmap
According to Marie Pawlak of Forbes, “as people move throughout the organization it creates a company-wide ripple effect”1. Due to this effect that succession has on an organization, she suggests adopting a holistic succession plan that accounts for leadership positions at all levels of the organization. By creating a multilevel succession roadmap, your organization will ensure that A players are not only fulfilling roles within a strategic level, but also on an execution level. Pawlak also states that this roadmap ensures that your organization is able to adapt to industry changes at all levels. As a result, this positions your organization to not only have success in the present, but also for the future.
Development at All Levels
There are many methods that your organization can adopt to ensure that it has the bench strength that is conducive for a smooth transition:
- Development Opportunities: For your talent to grow, your employees must be provided with opportunities to facilitate development. Outside of daily work, it is important for your organization to provide learning opportunities such as conferences and workshops to help employees explore skills or interests.
- Mentorship Programs: When establishing a mentorship program, entry or lower level employees are able to build their network while learning from the experiences of their co-workers. This provides them with an opportunity to learn something that will push them towards a succession path of their own.
- Goal Setting: No matter what level an employee is at within a company, it is important to introduce and encourage goal setting. By doing so, you are allowing them to envision a future within your organization while allowing them to identify goals that will push them to achieve their best self.
The Predictive Index Behavioural Assessment™
When building your multilevel succession roadmap, it is important for your succession planning team to understand WHO you are incorporating into your plans. Analytics tools such as the Predictive Index Behavioural Assessment™ provide insights into the motivations and drives of human behaviour. As a result, it allows you to get a clear picture of who your employees are, and where they fit within your succession plans.
