A Growth Mindset: The Key to Developing Future Leaders

The world of business is constantly changing, and as an important element of business, so are hiring habits. The common saying “hire for attitude, train for skill” has become a mantra for many hiring managers; but, what does it mean? What is the “attitude” that recruitment teams are looking for? Many of these teams would answer: “a growth mindset”.
What is a Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset is essentially a commitment to learning and development. It is rooted within the belief that talent “can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others” (Dweck, 2016). Opposite to this is the fixed mindset where people believe that “their talents are innate gifts” (Dweck, 2016).
Why Hire for a Growth Mindset?
Despite the allure from the confidence and skill level associated with a fixed-mindset, organizations who hire for a growth mindset see positive results. According to Carol Dweck, organizations who hire for a growth mindset say that “their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed; they also receive far greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation”. On the other hand, organizations who adopt a fixed mindset often experience corrupt activities such as cheating and deception for personal gain (Dweck, 2016). Overall, the decision to recruit for a growth mindset can impact the engagement levels in your organization.
